Surcee's is an event and wedding venue on the second floor of 559 King Street, on Upper King Street in downtown Charleston. It has three parlors and a walled terrace, holds up to 150 guests, and runs its own food, bar and planning. The name is said ser-SEE. A surcee is a small, thoughtful gift given for no particular occasion, valued for the thought behind it.

Name and History

The venue traces its building to a popular candy shop in the 19th century. In 2010 the current team opened the upstairs as Upstairs at Midtown, a small event venue that kept that name for more than a decade and hosted over 1,000 celebrations. The business then expanded into a larger space across 557 and 559 King Street. Renovations added modern conveniences and more capacity while keeping the building's historic character, and the venue reopened as Surcee's.

Its founder, Kathleen Shuler, is a College of Charleston graduate who worked with event planning firms across the country before starting Surcee's.

Rooms and Capacity

Guests climb to the second floor, where 2,300 square feet holds three interior rooms and an outdoor terrace. The parlors have hardwood floors, brick walls, coffered ceilings, antiqued mirrors and iron chandeliers. Large windows look down onto King Street and fill the rooms with daylight.

Set out in rows for a talk or meeting, the Main Parlor seats 40 and the East and West Parlors seat 24 each.

Food and Drink

Catering and the bar are run by the venue. Menus are built for each event around Lowcountry ingredients and reworked classic dishes, and the bartenders make handcrafted cocktails and seasonal drinks. Several of the reviews on the venue's site single out the food.

Tables, chairs, flatware, glassware and serveware come with the rental. So do a sound system, wireless microphones, a portable TV screen and Wi-Fi.

Planning Team

The Surcee's team plans each event from the first inquiry through the day itself and manages it on site. Sofie Fetter is Director of Hospitality, Regina Anderson is Director of Sales and Maddie Streeter is Director of Events, with Leigh Gillan and Paige McElwain as event producers. Alongside weddings, the venue hosts rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, alumni and corporate events, and holiday parties.

The venue holds a 4.9-star rating from 56 reviews on Google.

Booking

Surcee's publishes no prices, and quotes come by inquiry through surceeschs.com, by phone on (843) 737-4281 or by email at [email protected]. Twenty hotels sit within a five-minute walk, and the airport is a 15-minute drive. Surcee's has an entry in the wedding venue directory, beside the other Lowcountry wedding venues. The order in which to book everything else is set out in a guide to booking a Lowcountry wedding.

Terrace

The terrace sits on the second level, enclosed by brick and stucco walls with climbing ivy and café string lights overhead. It seats 40 for dinner and 60 for a ceremony.

Reviews on the venue's site call it the rooftop.
