Where to watch a movie outdoors in the Lowcountry
A drive-in open Thursday to Sunday every week of the year, free nights on the grass at Hilton Head and Bluffton, and what each one costs.
The Lowcountry still has a real drive-in — three screens off Highway 21 outside Beaufort, running every week of the year — and in summer the parks join in, putting up screens on the grass for free family films. Here is where to watch, what it costs, and when to show up.

Highway 21 Drive-In
The drive-in has been showing films on Parker Drive since 1978, and the evening still works the way it always has: pick your screen, tune the car radio to the frequency posted on the board, and wait for the sun to go down — around 8.45 in midsummer. Friday and Saturday are double features, so one ticket buys the whole night; Thursday and Sunday run a single film.
The ticket window and concession stand open at 6pm, and the line starts building around seven, so arriving early buys you a good spot on the field and time for dinner — the concession stand handles that, since outside food stays home. Dogs are welcome. Adults are $11.77, seniors and military $9.63, kids five to twelve $6.42, and under-fives get in free. It’s about forty minutes from Bluffton and ninety from Charleston, a fair drive for a proper double feature under the stars.
The parks show films free all summer
On Hilton Head, Shelter Cove Community Park runs free family films on the grass every Thursday at 7.30pm, June through August. Bring a low chair or a blanket; most people carry dinner in from the Towne Centre restaurants next door or the Kroger nearby.
Bluffton spreads its free series across the spring, rotating between Oscar Frazier Park, Martin Family Park and New Riverside Park in April, May and June — games and inflatables from 5pm, film at 6. The town returns in December with a screening at Dubois Park on Friday the 4th at 5.30pm, timed to the tree lighting and Santa’s workshop.
Closest to Charleston is Gahagan Park in Summerville, about forty minutes away, with a free screening on Friday 18 September — gates at 6pm, film at sunset.
And a word for Mount Pleasant: Patriots Point runs movie nights aboard the USS Yorktown, but those play inside the ship, in the Smokey Stover Theater — a fine evening of a different kind.
