The Gibbes has been Charleston's art museum since 1905, and its collection follows the city rather than the century, running from colonial portraits to work made a few streets away this year. It is best known for American miniature portraits, painted small enough to be carried in a pocket. A recent renovation opened the top floor to daylight and put working artist studios where storage used to be.
