The Lowcountry Brunch Guide: Where the Coast Eats Late

From Charleston benedicts to Savannah flat whites and island biscuit sandwiches, a town-by-town guide to the best brunch and late breakfast across the Lowcountry.

Brunch on the coast is a weekend institution, and Charleston wrote the rulebook: shrimp and grits, a biscuit the size of a fist, and a line down the sidewalk by ten. The rest of the Lowcountry keeps its own pace. Savannah leans European over flat whites and avocado toast, Beaufort stays neighborly, and the islands run on beach-town diners that open early and pour coffee like they mean it.

The common thread is Southern breakfast played straight: eggs over cheese grits, benedicts under a blanket of hollandaise, fried chicken folded into a waffle. Bring a newspaper and an appetite. Here is where the Lowcountry lingers over a late-morning table, town by town.

How brunch works here

Two rules keep a Lowcountry brunch from going sideways. Reserve where you can, because the good rooms in Charleston and Savannah book out by mid-morning on a Saturday, and the spots that take no reservations put a real wait between you and your table. Order the local thing while you are at it: shrimp and grits, a fried-chicken biscuit, or she-crab soup if the kitchen makes it. The tourist move is to order pancakes at a place that built its name on grits.

Savannah

Savannah brunches with a passport. The Collins Quarter pours flat whites and lavender lattes to a crowd that spills onto Bull Street, while Toast! keeps it all-day and unfussy. Goose Feathers has been feeding the historic district pastries and egg sandwiches for decades.

Bluffton

Old Town Bluffton keeps brunch low-key. The Corner Perk roasts its own coffee and turns out a proper cafe breakfast, Craft Kitchen plates a more ambitious weekend spread, and Eggs Up Grill handles the classic griddle run for the whole table.

Hilton Head

The island wakes up hungry. Palmetto Bay SunRise Cafe has been the local morning standby for years, Bad Biscuit earns its name one biscuit sandwich at a time, and Hilton Head Social Bakery brings a French hand to the pastry case.

Beaufort

Beaufort takes breakfast personally. Blackstone’s has been the downtown morning table for decades, Beedos runs generous and Southern, and Magnolia Cafe sends out a bright, produce-forward plate a few blocks off the water.

Mount Pleasant

East of the Cooper, brunch runs big. Page’s Okra Grill serves Southern breakfast all day to a crowd that happily waits for it, Big Bad Breakfast does biscuits and benedicts with a Mississippi accent, and Toast! carries its all-day formula across the bridge.

Charleston

Charleston is the Lowcountry’s brunch capital, full stop. Millers All Day pairs stone-ground grits with a stiff morning cocktail on King Street, Iron Rose plates one of the prettier benedicts in town, and Ruby Sunshine imports New Orleans by way of bananas Foster French toast.
